MSN TV (formerly WebTV) is a subscription-based online service that packages specially screened and selected content. All Web content is adjusted for viewing on a television, and the graphics are enhanced for better viewing. The MAT976A1's TVLens technology presents Web pages with stunning clarity: content is always readable, and the TVLens eliminates interlace flickering and enhances your perceived image quality. The unit comes with Philips Magnavox's WebEye remote infrared receiver, a device that lets you place the MAT976A1 out of view in a more convenient place. The 3Com Ergo Audrey is part of the new breed of Internet appliances designed to get you connected with e-mail and exploring the Web with as few extraneous hardware features and as little hassle as possible. The Audrey certainly fulfills that end of the bargain, and it adds organization tools that can help a family keep track of busy schedules. But it's important to remember that it is a simplified appliance--it's limited in the scope of tasks it can perform and thus can be frustrating to savvy Web users.

To the credit of 3Com, the Audrey looks unlike any other Internet appliance on the market. It reminded us of magazine articles from the 1950s that imagined what it would be like to live in the 21st century. Its simple, cool curves fan out like a T-bird, and it has a chrome top (with two speakers) and oversize buttons that help you navigate between calendar, Web browser, e-mail, and Audrey channels. It also has a nicely compact body, ready to fit right into the kitchen of tomorrow, today.

The Audrey comes with just a small keyboard (which connects via an infrared port), a power cord, and a clear plastic stylus that sticks out of the top of the device and is used to tap commands and browser buttons on the touch screen. The docked stylus also doubles as an e-mail alert, flashing green whenever the Audrey connects and collects e-mail. You also get a serial port and two USB ports for connecting Palm or Handspring docking cradles (you can synchronize only with Palm OS handhelds). The Audrey is also broadband ready if you use an optional USB-to-Ethernet adapter.

Setting up the Audrey was really quite simple. We entered the user information to our existing dial-up account and connected immediately. Happily, the Audrey is one of the few Web appliances that enable you to choose your own Internet service provider (ISP). If you don't have one, the Audrey defaults to suggesting AT&T WorldNet for $15 per month--but doesn't force you into the choice.

The Audrey's e-mail center isn't very robust, offering only New, Old, and Sent sections. You can't receive attachments, and there is no option of storage folders. But this is part of the Audrey's elegant, minimalist philosophy, targeted to users with a full-powered computer to use as their main online communications center (where e-mail can be stored and sorted and attachments viewed). That said, there are some fun features to the e-mail application, allowing you to doodle a message (sent as a GIF image) or a recorded message of up to 3 minutes (sent as a WAV file).

We also found the device's screen frustrating; its small size caused many Web pages to scroll horizontally, and the contrast was too dark unless we sat in a precise position. Even more unnerving was the small keyboard, which inexplicably features punctuation keys half the size of the letter keys. These tiny keys caused us to continuously make typos in our Web addresses--strange, for a device supposedly designed for Internet use, where Web addresses feature many "/" and "." strokes.

The browser isn't stacked with plug-ins, but it does feature Macromedia Flash and RealPlayer for streaming audio, allowing you to use the Audrey as an Internet radio. Unfortunately, you can't surf the Web or use other applications and listen to audio at the same time. We also found that once the Audrey's cache memory was filled (after Web browsing and listening to BBC Radio 1), the audio got choppy and we had to restart the unit.

In addition to Web content, the Audrey also features a set of channels that download content at specified times of the day and night (so you don't have to connect each time you want to read news from ABC). To access a channel, we turned the TV-style knob on the front and selected ESPN, which delivered about three of that day's top headlines. Unfortunately, only a few channels are available at this time--others include CBS MarketWatch and Mr. Showbiz.

The other main component of the Audrey is its organizer features, borrowed from the Palm OS. We synchronized our calendar information and e-mail and phone contact information from our Handspring Visor, but that's all that's stored--no addresses, no notes (unless attached to calendar items), and no to-do list (a big disappointment for an appliance meant for the kitchen). However, it does allow you to have two tracks of calendar items--one for the parents and one for the kids.

Of all the Internet appliances available, the Audrey is truly the most appliancelike--and that's a compliment. It's a very functional product for your busy family kitchen. Just don't expect the whiz-bang technology you take for granted on your Pentium-class PC. Still, we hope that future versions of the Audrey do become more robust, with added online and organization features. --Agen G.N. Schmitz

If you'd like to send and receive e-mail but don't want to bother learning about or paying for a computer, the MailBug may be perfect for you. With the MailBug, checking your e-mail is a easy as pressing a single button.

To set up the MailBug, we connected the AC power and plugged in the telephone line cord. The MailBug's screen came to life and instructed us to press a button so that it could call a toll-free number to set the date and time. After setting the time, the MailBug informed us that we had new e-mail. Without checking the manual, we intuitively determined how to view, read, reply to, and later compose e-mail. (When you receive your MailBug, you must obtain an e-mail address and sign up for Landel Telecom's proprietary e-mail/Internet service by calling the customer support number included in the box. For more information, click on the FAQ in the left navigation bar, and see the question that asks "How does the MailBug e-mail service work?" Note that our test unit was preprogrammed with an e-mail address.)

The MailBug has 61 main keys, 8 function keys above the main keyboard, and 12 menu buttons next to the LCD screen. Typing on the full-size keyboard is fast and easy. The Shift keys and functions keys are conveniently placed and all the keys were responsive and comfortable as we typed our messages.

While browsing the onscreen menus, we discovered the Services function, which let us view headline news and look up stock quotes. We also located the built-in phone book, which allowed us to create and save names and phone numbers. The entire process was straightforward and intuitive.

Additional features include an e-mail address book and caller ID with a 100-call history and automatic "display and dial." A status LED blinks rapidly to indicate that the phone is ringing and blinks slowly to indicate new caller-ID calls or voice-mail messages. (A subscription to caller ID and voice mail is optional through your phone company.) The documentation, which is easy for novice users to understand, completely explains how to compose, send, receive, and manage e-mail.

If you don't want a PC but you do want to send and receive e-mail, the MailBug from Landel Telecom is an easy-to-use alternative.

The Sharp TM-20 is a stand-alone portable e-mail editor designed for travelers or anyone lacking a portable PC or access to the Internet. Setup consists of inserting the batteries and setting the clock. You must also sign up for the PocketMail e-mail service by calling a toll-free number or filling out a form on the Internet. The payment plan (either monthly or annual) permits you to receive unlimited text-only messages that are each no more than 4,000 characters long.

The menu prompts are not entirely intuitive, but by following the Quick Start instruction sheet, we set up the unit and the PocketMail account and sent our first e-mail message in about 30 minutes. The TM-20's complete alphanumeric keyboard and buttons are small, making touch-typing impractical, but our short test messages were easy enough to compose.

To send and receive messages, you open the acoustic modem "earpiece" mounted on the bottom of the unit, dial PocketMail's toll-free number, listen for a prompt, press the TM-20 against the telephone handset, and push one button. Reassuring LEDs let you know that the sending and receiving processes are taking place. We successfully sent and received several messages through different ISPs and desktop e-mail programs. We also sent an HTML e-mail message to the TM-20; the PocketMail system stripped out the HTML code but preserved the message itself.

The organizer functions are primitive, useful mainly for tracking names, addresses, and appointments. You can make backups of your TM-20's organizer and e-mail messages by connecting it via the included serial cable to a desktop PC. In our test, the backup program took a surprisingly long 15 minutes.

If you need little more than an alarm clock with your e-mail on the go, then the inexpensive Sharp TM-20 may be just for you.

The MailStation sends and receives data through a standard telephone line but does not monopolize the line--it dials in at set times that you can program and automatically hangs up when you want to use the phone. It also disconnects upon the retrieval of e-mail or when the sending of e-mail is completed. The average length of time to send or receive e-mail is approximately 30 seconds, keeping telephone charges low.

The MailStation is designed to work with its own e-mail service (MyMailstation.com). Service costs $9.95 per month, and local dial-up phone numbers are available throughout the United States. While you cannot access e-mail from another Internet service provider (ISP), you can forward e-mail from other ISPs to your MyMailStation account.

You can store up to 400 typical e-mail messages in the MailStation's memory, which holds up to the equivalent of 100 pages of text. E-mail messages are limited to 8 KB, which is approximately 66 lines per message. Keep in mind that if you reply to an e-mail, the original message, including the headers and routing information, is considered part of the 66 lines of allowable space. The MailStation does not allow you to read attachments or view photos attached to e-mail, but you can view photos and attachments from your PC via a Web mail account at no additional cost.

You can also use the MailStation as a calculator or calendar and clean up text with the 20,000-word spellchecker. There is also room for about 1,000 contacts in the address book. The MailStation also automatically downloads selected content from Cidco.

You can hook the MailStation up to a parallel-port compatible printer (such as the HP 648C or HP Apollo P2250) to print your e-mail or Web content.
